Your complete travel guide to Tangalle, Sri Lanka — discover the best things to do, where to stay, and how to get there.
About Tangalle
Tangalle (also spelled Tangalla) is where Sri Lanka's south coast gets truly wild and beautiful. This laid-back fishing town offers some of the most pristine and uncrowded beaches in the country, with long stretches of golden sand backed by coconut palms.
What sets Tangalle apart is its raw, undeveloped beauty. While nearby Mirissa and Unawatuna bustle with tourists, Tangalle maintains a peaceful atmosphere. The beaches here are powerful and dramatic, with strong waves and currents - better for walking and watching sunsets than swimming in many areas.
The region is famous for sea turtle nesting, particularly at Rekawa Beach where five species come ashore to lay eggs. The Mulkirigala Rock Temple, a mini-Sigiriya with ancient cave temples, is a must-visit nearby attraction. For travelers seeking a quieter, more authentic coastal experience, Tangalle is the perfect escape.
