Kaudulla National Park is part of the famous "Elephant Corridor" connecting Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu forest reserves. When water levels shift, elephants migrate between these parks, and Kaudulla often hosts The Gathering when Minneriya's tank dries up.
Why visit Kaudulla? It offers a quieter alternative to Minneriya with equally impressive elephant sightings. During September to November, Kaudulla can have even more elephants than its famous neighbor as herds follow the water and fresh grass.
The park centers around the ancient Kaudulla Tank, built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD. This 6,900-acre reservoir attracts not just elephants but also sambar deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species. It's an excellent choice for visitors wanting to avoid crowds while still experiencing Sri Lanka's spectacular elephant gatherings.
