Leave Kandy behind as the road climbs steeply into the hill country. The temperature drops noticeably and the landscape transforms into a rolling patchwork of tea estates, waterfalls, and pine forests.

Stop: Ramboda Falls

Pause at Ramboda Falls (109 meters), one of the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, visible from the main road. A short walk takes you to the base.

Late Morning: Tea Factory Tour

Visit a working tea factory to see the full journey from leaf to cup. Pedro Tea Estate and Bluefield Tea Factory are the most popular near Nuwara Eliya.

  • Browse the produce market for strawberries, leeks, and hill country vegetables

Day 6: Scenic Train & Departure

The grand finale of your hill country adventure

Option A: Departure via Colombo

From Ella or Bandarawela, your driver can take you to Colombo airport in approximately 5-6 hours via the Southern Expressway.

Option B: Continue to the Coast

Drop down from the hills to the south coast (3-4 hours) and connect with a beach itinerary. Mirissa and Tangalle are the closest beach towns.

Option C: Bandarawela Exploration

If you have time before departing, explore the charming town of Bandarawela - less touristy than Ella with a lively local market, the Dhowa Rock Temple (an ancient carved Buddha), and excellent climate year-round.

Hill Country Tips

What to Pack

The hill country is significantly cooler than the coast and lowlands. Pack accordingly:

  • Warm layers: A fleece or light jacket is essential (mornings at Horton Plains can be 5 degrees C)
  • Rain jacket: Mist and drizzle are common, even in the dry season
  • Sturdy hiking shoes: Not sandals - the trails at Horton Plains and Little Adam's Peak are rocky
  • Sunscreen and hat: The equatorial sun is strong even when the air feels cool
  • Reusable water bottle: Plastic bags are banned at Horton Plains

Best Time to Visit

  • January to March: The driest and clearest months in the hill country
  • April: Sri Lankan New Year celebrations, beautiful but some hotels book up
  • May to September: Wetter, but the landscapes are at their greenest
  • Year-round: The hill country never gets truly hot - daytime temperatures hover around 15-22 degrees C

Train Tips

  • Book first-class observation seats at least two weeks in advance through Sri Lanka Railways (seatreservation.railway.gov.lk)
  • Second class is unreserved and fills quickly - board early and grab a window seat
  • Third class is cheap but very crowded
  • Sit on the right side (heading from Kandy to Ella) for the best views
  • Trains run late frequently - bring snacks, water, and patience

Altitude Considerations

  • The hill country peaks at 2,300 meters (Horton Plains). Most people do not experience altitude issues, but drink extra water and take it easy if you feel lightheaded.
  • If you are coming directly from sea level, give yourself a day in Kandy (500 meters) to acclimatize before heading higher.
