Why Visit Sigiriya?
Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress built on an enormous rock plateau rising 200 meters (660 feet) high. Dubbed by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World, Sigiriya showcases remarkable archaeological treasures: ruins of a palace, a complex network of fountains, canals, and ponds, massive gardens, and ancient frescoes.
Built by King Kashyapa in 477 CE, Sigiriya is considered one of the finest examples of urban planning in ancient times. The fortress was allegedly built as protection from his half-brother who intended to claim the throne. UNESCO declared Sigiriya a World Heritage Site in 1982, and it remains one of Sri Lanka's most popular tourist destinations.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress
The main attraction - climb 1,200 steps to the summit for breathtaking views. The climb takes 2-3 hours including time to explore the palace ruins and gardens.
Tip: Arrive early (7 AM opening) to beat the heat and crowds. Wear light, comfortable clothes and bring plenty of water.
Lion Gate
The main entrance to the fortress, featuring massive lion paws carved from rock. Originally, a full lion statue greeted visitors - only the paws remain today.
Sigiriya Frescoes
Ancient paintings on the western wall depicting beautiful women (believed to be King Kashyapa's wives or priestesses). Only 18 of the original hundreds survive.
Mirror Wall
A polished rock wall that once reflected the king's image. Covered with ancient graffiti and poems dating back to the 8th century.
Water Gardens
Remarkably preserved ancient gardens featuring pools, fountains, and an ingenious hydraulic system that still works during monsoon season.
Pidurangala Rock
A nearby mountain offering the best views of Sigiriya Rock. A 20-30 minute moderate hike to the top. Much cheaper entry (Rs. 500) than Sigiriya itself.
