The Sunny South Coast: Always a Favourite
The south coast is probably what most people think of when they imagine Sri Lankan beaches. It's popular for good reason! The weather here is usually best from around November to April.
Unawatuna: Picture Perfect Bay
Unawatuna is like a postcard come to life. It's a beautiful curved bay with calm, clear waters, perfect for swimming, even for families with little ones. The beach is lined with lovely little restaurants and guesthouses. You can relax on a sunbed, enjoy fresh seafood, and watch the sunset. Just behind the beach, you can climb the Japanese Peace Pagoda for amazing views. Mirissa: Whales, Waves, and Good Vibes
Mirissa is famous for two things: whale watching and its lively beach scene. From November to April, you can take a boat trip to see giant blue whales and playful dolphins – it's an unforgettable experience! The beach itself has a fun, youthful vibe with cool beach bars and cafes. There's a small rock island you can walk to at low tide, called Parrot Rock, which offers great views, especially at sunrise. If you like a bit of surfing, the waves at the ends of the bay are good for beginners.

Weligama: Learn to Surf!
If you've ever wanted to try surfing, Weligama is the place to be. The bay has gentle, rolling waves that are perfect for learning. You'll find lots of surf schools right on the beach, ready to give you a lesson. It's a very friendly and encouraging atmosphere. Even if you don't surf, it's fun to watch everyone else. Weligama town is also interesting, with its stilt fishermen (though many are more for photos now, some still fish traditionally).

Hikkaduwa: Coral Reefs and Party Nights
Hikkaduwa was one of the first tourist beaches in Sri Lanka, and it still has a lot to offer. There's a coral sanctuary where you can go snorkeling or take a glass-bottom boat to see colourful fish. Sadly, some of the coral has been damaged over the years, but efforts are being made to protect it. Hikkaduwa is also known for its nightlife, with beach parties and music, especially during the peak season.
Tangalle: Quiet Beauty and Hidden Coves
Further east along the south coast, Tangalle offers a more peaceful and spread-out beach experience. It's not one single beach, but a series of beautiful bays and coves, some wild and windswept, others calm and secluded. This is a great place if you want to escape the crowds and just relax. You can find some lovely boutique hotels and guesthouses tucked away here. It's a good area to explore if you're looking for Sri Lanka's Hidden Gems: Beyond the Tourist Trail.

The Wild East Coast: A Different Season, A Different Charm
The east coast has a different season to the south. The best time to visit here is from May to September when the seas are calm and the sun is shining.
Arugam Bay: Surfer's Paradise
Arugam Bay, or 'A-Bay' as the surfers call it, is world-famous for its incredible surf breaks. "Main Point" is for the experienced surfers, but there are other spots like Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm that are good for learners too. Even if you don't surf, A-Bay has a really cool, laid-back vibe. It's a small community with rustic guesthouses, yoga retreats, and healthy cafes. The surrounding area is also beautiful, with lagoons and wildlife.

Pasikudah and Kalkudah: Calm Waters and Golden Sands
Pasikudah Bay is famous for its incredibly shallow and calm waters. You can walk out for hundreds of metres and the water will still only be up to your waist! This makes it super safe for swimming and perfect for families. Kalkudah beach, right next to it, is quieter and less developed. These beaches are great for pure relaxation. Many people find this area offers a chance to enjoy the coast even if they are travelling Sri Lanka on a Budget: Expert Tips for Affordable Travel as there are options for different price ranges.
Nilaveli and Uppuveli: Diving, Snorkeling, and Pigeon Island
Near Trincomalee, you'll find the beautiful beaches of Nilaveli and Uppuveli. Nilaveli is long and wide, with soft white sand. Just a short boat ride from here is Pigeon Island National Park, one of the best places in Sri Lanka for snorkeling and diving. You can see colourful coral and lots of marine life, including reef sharks (the friendly kind!). Uppuveli is a bit more developed with more guesthouses and restaurants, but still has a relaxed feel.

The West Coast: Close to Colombo and More
The west coast beaches are very accessible, especially from Colombo and the airport.
Negombo: Close to the Airport and Fishing Charm
Negombo is very close to the Bandaranaike International Airport, so it's a popular first or last stop for many travellers. The beach is long and wide, and while it might not be as pristine as some southern beaches, it has its own charm. Negombo is a major fishing town, and you can see the fishermen bringing in their catch and visit the bustling fish market. The Dutch Canal here is also interesting to explore.
Bentota: Water Sports Galore
Bentota is known as the water sports capital of Sri Lanka. The Bentota Ganga (river) meets the sea here, creating a wide lagoon that's perfect for jet skiing, water skiing, windsurfing, banana boat rides, and more. The beach itself is broad and beautiful, lined with some larger resorts. It's a great option for families and those looking for an active beach holiday.
Kalpitiya: Dolphins, Kitesurfing, and Remote Islands
Further north on the west coast, Kalpitiya is a unique destination. It's a peninsula with the Puttalam Lagoon on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. From November to April, Kalpitiya is one of the best places in the world to see huge pods of spinner dolphins. It's also becoming a major kitesurfing destination, especially from May to October. You can also take boat trips to the nearby Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary and explore remote islands.
Choosing Your Perfect Beach
With so many options, how do you choose? Think about what you want most from your beach holiday:
- Surfing: Arugam Bay (advanced), Weligama (beginners), Hikkaduwa, Mirissa.

A Little Bit of Beach Care
Our beaches are precious, so please help us keep them beautiful. Always take your rubbish with you, avoid standing on coral, and be respectful of local customs. When swimming, be aware of currents, especially during the monsoon seasons. It's always a good idea to swim where locals or lifeguards (if available) say it's safe.
Don't Forget the Food!
No beach trip in Sri Lanka is complete without trying the amazing food! Fresh seafood is a must, of course. Look out for beachside stalls selling delicious kottu roti, hoppers, or fresh fruit juices. It's all part of the experience, and you can learn more about our island's flavours on a Taste of Paradise: A Food Lover's Journey Through Sri Lanka.
