Adventure Tips
Fitness Preparation
- Start training at least 4 weeks before your trip. Focus on cardio, leg strength, and core stability.
- The Knuckles trek is genuinely demanding - 12-15 km per day over steep, uneven terrain with a pack.
- Surfing uses muscles you did not know you had. If you are new, expect sore arms and shoulders.
Essential Gear
- Hiking boots with ankle support (broken in before the trip)
- Quick-dry clothing - cotton stays wet and causes chafing
- Headlamp - essential for the Knuckles camping and pre-dawn starts
- Dry bag - protects electronics during rafting, canyoning, and river crossings
- Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+)
- First aid kit with blister plasters, antiseptic, and anti-leech spray
- Water purification tablets for the Knuckles trek
Safety Considerations
- Always use certified operators for rafting, canyoning, and diving. Ask to see certificates.
- Sri Lankan surf breaks can be powerful. Respect the ocean and know your limits.
- Leeches in the Knuckles are unavoidable but harmless. Apply DEET or tobacco-based repellent to ankles and legs.
- Carry comprehensive travel insurance that covers adventure activities including diving.
Best Time for Adventure
- December to March: Best for diving (visibility), whale watching, and south coast surf
- April to September: Best for Arugam Bay surfing and east coast activities
- Year-round: Rafting, canyoning, and trekking are available in all seasons (rafting is best in the wetter months when river levels are high)
